Why we love sumac

At Sumacqua, we all love the taste of sumac. But it's more than just a flavoursome spice, sumac is packed full of antioxidants and nutrients that can supercharge your body and mind.

Sumac hasn’t been studied as closely as some other spices, such as turmeric. However, it has long been associated with health benefits. Today, scientists are increasingly uncovering potential health benefits in small scale studies.

Experts believe that the presence of multiple antioxidant compounds within sumac is the primary reason for its broad therapeutic potential.

So, here’s what science is saying:

1. Sumac can reduce muscle pain during and after aerobic exercise. A 2016 study showed that a group of subjects receiving a sumac juice drink experienced less pain than a placebo group. Read about this study more here.

2. Sumac may help with managing blood sugar levels. In a 2014 study, a group of individuals given a sumac supplement showed significantly improved average blood sugar and antioxidant levels versus a placebo group over three months.

3.Sumac may help in fighting cholesterol. A 2011 study on rats suggest that sumac benefits heart health by lowering cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease. A study on hens came to a similar conclusion. High cholesterol is one of the biggest risk factors for heart disease in humans.

4.Sumac may help in reducing bone loss. A 2015 study, in which sumac was administered to rats, found that the spice altered the balance of several specific proteins involved in bone metabolism, resulting in decreased bone loss.

5. Sumac may help treat a range of conditions that, to some extent caused by inflammation. For example, migraines are characterised by increased oxidative stress and neurogenic inflammation in the brain, thus an antioxidant-rich spice with anti-inflammatory properties may have a preventative effect. But inflammation is also seen as a root cause of hundreds of deadly diseases and illnesses. This is where anti-inflammatories like sumac can act as preventative.
